Dear Gary,

Thank you for your query. I’m afraid Nicole is simply not taking on new clients at the moment; her list is crammed full and she has as much work as she can handle. We may well be missing out on something wonderful, but Nicole is determined not to over-stretch as she’d hate to neglect any of her current authors.

Our apologies for this disappointing response, we hope that someone else comes through for you soon.

With regrets and very best wishes,

Jenny Lu

Subject: query — The Emerald Archive

Ms. Aragi:

I seek representation for my 400-page book titled The Emerald Archive, a work of fiction about a Jewish-Iranian emigre family living in Manhattan. The book is actually a theme and variations. It opens with a three-page prose “theme” that summarizes the plot of the entire book. The remaining 380 pages are a series of poems that function as a collection of variations on the theme. The story unfolds through the poems. The final page, in prose, ties together the themes of the book.

The major characters of my book include a high-earning dental surgeon and his depressive wife, a gay librarian, an accounting student, a stripper, a concert pianist and a Park Avenue psychoanalyst. There are numerous minor characters.

I am an unpublished author.
